Neurodiversity Play Therapy

What is Neurodiversity Play Therapy

Neuroaffirming Play Therapy is an approach that recognizes and celebrates neurodiversity, affirming the unique strengths, experiences, and needs of neurodivergent individuals. This practice involves creating a therapeutic environment that embraces diversity in neurological functioning and tailors' interventions to support the well-being of neurodivergent clients.

Here are key aspects of a neuroaffirming Play Therapy practice;

How Neurodiversity Play Therapy Works

Understanding Neurodiversity

It is imperative to acknowledge and appreciate the diversity of neurological experiences, including conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurodivergent traits.
We understand neurodivergent individuals have unique strengths and abilities, and their differences should be respected and valued.

Individualised Approaches

We tailor our Play Therapy interventions based on the specific needs, preferences, and sensory profiles of each child. We understand that what works for one neurodivergent individual may not work for another, emphasising the importance of individualised and flexible approaches.

Sensory-Inclusive Environment

We have created a sensory-friendly and inclusive therapy space that accommodates various sensory needs. This includes providing sensory tools, allowing movement breaks, and minimising sensory overload.

We recognise the role of sensory processing differences in the experiences of neurodivergent individuals and adapt the Play Therapy environment accordingly.

Strengths-Based Approach

We focus on the strengths and interests of each neurodivergent child rather than solely on their deficits or challenges. Utilising play activities that align with their strengths and preferences, promote a positive and empowering therapeutic experience.

Communication Styles

We acknowledge and respect diverse communication styles, including non-verbal communication, echolalia, or alternative communication methods. Where needed, varied communication modalities, such as visual supports, social stories, or visual schedules, are incorporated into sessions to enhance understanding and communication.

Flexibility and Autonomy

Flexibility can be employed in the session structure in order to adapt to the child's needs and preferences during Play Therapy. Choices and opportunities for autonomy are provided within the therapeutic process, to foster a sense of control and empowerment for the neurodivergent child.

Cultural Competence

We consider the cultural and familial context of neurodivergent individuals - recognising that different cultures may have unique perspectives on neurodiversity. Collaboration with families is encouraged to integrate cultural values and practices into the Play Therapy process.

Collaboration with Families

We engage and collaborate with families to better understand their perspectives, goals, and values.

We provide psychoeducation to families on neurodiversity and share strategies that support their child's unique needs outside of therapy sessions.

Promoting Emotional Regulation

The use of Play Therapy activities is to promote emotional regulation and self-expression, whilst recognising the importance of emotional well-being for neurodivergent children. We incorporate sensory-based interventions to support emotional regulation and self-soothing.

Advocacy and Social Justice

C2T will advocate for the rights and inclusion of neurodivergent individuals in broader social and educational contexts. We promote awareness and understanding of neurodiversity in the community, contributing to a more inclusive and affirming society.

Incorporating neuroaffirming principles into Play Therapy practices can create a supportive and empowering therapeutic environment for neurodivergent children, which in turn fosters growth and development.

It is essential to note that the effectiveness of Play Therapy can vary from child to child, and interventions are tailored to the specific needs and characteristics of each individual.

Our C2T Therapist is a skilled and experienced Play Therapist, who can assess children's unique strengths and challenges and design interventions to support their emotional and developmental growth.
