Caregivers Guide To Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT)

Why Child-Centered Play Therapy for Children

This therapeutic approach focuses on the child's natural ability to express themselves through play.

Here is some information for caregivers about Child-Centered Play Therapy;

How Play Therapy Works

CCPT a Form of Psychotherapy

Where children use play as a medium to communicate and explore their thoughts and emotions. It is based on the belief that children have an innate capacity for self-expression and healing through play.

The Importance of Play

Play is a child's natural language. Through play, children can communicate their feelings, experiences, and perceptions in a non-threatening and enjoyable way.

CCPT provides a safe and structured environment for this expressive play.

The Therapist's Role

The therapist takes a supportive and non-directive role and creates a space where the child feels accepted, understood, and free to express themselves without judgment. They observe and join in the child's play, allowing the child to take the lead.

The Playroom Environment

CCPT typically takes place in a playroom filled with a variety of toys, art materials, and other creative tools. This environment is designed to stimulate the child's imagination and provide opportunities

for self-expression.

How Children Benefit Through Emotional Expression

CCPT encourages children to express and process their emotions in a natural and spontaneous way.

Build Self-Esteem

Through play, children can explore and develop a positive sense of self, enhancing self-esteem and confidence.

Build Coping Skills

CCPT allows children to practice problem-solving, decision-making, and coping skills in a supportive setting.

Supporting Communication

Children who may struggle to verbalize their feelings can communicate through play, providing valuable insights for the therapist.

Confidentiality and Trust

Caregivers can be reassured that information shared by your child during play therapy sessions is treated with the utmost confidentiality. C2T will only share relevant information if there are concerns about your child's safety.

Parental Involvement

While CCPT sessions are typically one-on-one between child and therapist, intervention involves periodic parent or caregiver consultations to discuss your child's progress and offer guidance on supporting your child at home. Where possible, C2T encourages parents to be involved in their child's therapy should they feel comfortable to do so.

Therapy Duration

Is based on each individual child's needs. Some children may benefit from short-term intervention, while others may engage in longer-term therapy. The therapist will collaborate with caregivers to determine the appropriate duration.

Caregiver Support

Caregivers may be provided with resources and guidance on understanding their child's play, supporting the therapeutic process at home, and fostering a positive and nurturing environment.

Collaboration

Open communication between caregiver/s and therapist is essential. Caregivers are encouraged to share any relevant information about the child's life, experiences, and concerns, contributing to a holistic understanding of the child's needs.

Caregivers play an essential role in supporting and reinforcing the benefits of play therapy in the child's overall well-being.

Take the first step in your transformative journey with your child at C2T.
